Sketching subjects over and over stimulates growth.  It develops familiarity with your subject.  The more familiar you are the easier it is to draw intricate or comples areas.  Learning anatomical structure is important.  Anatomy shows you form and direction, whether its a dog, an elephant, a human, tree or flower.  An arm or leg can be accurately placed by ddrawing the bones in first.
